New Zealand Chase First Big Scalp in 10 Years
The only teams that New Zealand have beaten in a test series in almost 10 years are Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and the West Indies – all teams languishing below or near them in the ICC Test rankings. Their last victory, other than these countries, was against Sri Lanka in 04/05. Make no mistake – beating India, the number 2 test nation in the World, would be a big deal for the side ranked number 9.
Against a disinterested Indian bowling attack and fielding effort, New Zealand have piled on 503 in the first innings of the first test, an innings led by a 224 run contribution from Brendon McCullum, who has flown back into form lately.
The Indians have again backed up the thoughts of the public that their attack stinks outside of the sub-continent. New Zealand managed to get their 503 in only 121 overs.
New Zealand have always been a side to show signs of potential without ever really realising it, that said, give them a sniff and they can do some damage. A home series against a side who have lost 9 out of their last 10 Tests away from home could well be that sniff.
India have slumped to 3/11 to begin their chase of New Zealand’s large total. Can New Zealand finish the job here and go one step closer to pulling off a huge upset?
Quick mention of New Zealand’s Trent Boult, who after 21 matches is averaging 26 with the ball. That’s exceptional; especially for a New Zealander!
