TC Ink Music: Arctic Monkeys – R U Mine?

Introducing a hopefully renewed focus on music here at TC Ink. In the past we have updated a ‘song of the week’, but I think it’s time that we took the time to voice our opinions on, mainly new, music.

The Arctic Monkeys are a band I have never go into. The track propelled them into popularity, ‘I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor’, didn’t make me raise an eyebrow and since then they disappeared off my radar into the depths of disinterest.

But the other day, this song titled ‘R U Mine?’ popped onto Triple J, boasting heavy riffs and a killer desert-like sound. After waiting so long in agony for a new QotSA album, hearing something with a clear, dark Homme influence was incredibly refreshing. Unlike other Arctic Monkeys I have heard, the vocals are not as happy and chirpy and instead mean business.

I intend to now look deeper into their album ‘Humbug’ which was largely produced by Josh Homme, and if the sounds off that album match up to this newly released standalone single then, well, I’ll be pleased.

I would go as far as saying this is the best rock song released so far in 2012. I will be now watching keenly for new Arctic Monkeys releases because if they continue down this road there could be some awesome tracks ahead.
